T31 Special Projects - Graduate Project/Thesis Proposals

The UWashington Formula Motorsports team is launching a few projects this fall and is looking for a few graduate-level applicants: students in ME, EE and CS seeking a leadership opportunity who will take and justify initiatives in a competitive environment.

Projects advising to be discussed along with the applicant’s particular focus. Master project and thesis options available. Students should expect to work in multidisciplinary teams integrated within the Formula Motorsports team, benefitting from the team’s network of sponsors and resources.

Autonomous Systems - Environment Recognition

Develop a framework for computer vision to recognize Autocross tracks using LiDAR and cameras. Work in a team to help set a direction and strategy. Spec out sensors, onboard computers, work on cone recognition, distance calculations, data fusion and mapping. Potential developments include boundary estimation and path planning, further integration.

Autonomous Systems - Automated Braking System

Develop a driverless hydropneumatic braking system compatible with regular driver inputs. Work in a team to determine system requirements, design and spec out parts. Design mechanical and/or electronics components, controls logic. Potential developments include further integration with other vehicle systems.

Autonomous Systems - Automated Steering System

Develop a power steering system compatible with regular driver inputs. Work in a team to determine system requirements, design and spec out parts. Design mechanical and/or electronics components, controls logic. Potential developments include further integration with other vehicle systems.

Power Electronics: Motor & Inverter Development

Develop a model for a three phase AC motor: work in a team to derive governing equations from Newton & Faraday’s principles. Test motor to obtain related constants. Potential developments include further work in motor design, motor control, with further derivations but also power electronic component design.
